Unique In The Creek Review – Easy To Use Wreath Boards
I have used several different types of rings to make my wreaths and my newest find was of a board that a gal in Canada made up and has the patent on. This idea she came up with really is a new and innovative way to go about making mesh wreaths.
Here are some examples of the things you can make with these boards
What are Wreath Boards?
These Wreath Boards are different from anything you have ever seen. They have guide holes, specifically spaced out so that you can create beautiful wreaths every time. With this “Unique” system, Laurie says that you can make just about anything you can imagine, in less time and with fewer supplies that traditional wreath making methods. She has video tutorials that she makes right from her kitchen table with the help of her husband. All of the tutorials are free to watch on YouTube and she goes into great care and detail with each video posting.
Pros and Cons of Unique in the Creek’s Wreath Boards
With everything there is bad to go with the good. Well, the bad, in my opinion is there is no hole in the center of the round ones. I think that this takes away from the actual definition of wreath. But for some, that can be a good thing. I actually found that when displaying them on wire racks for selling, having a solid backing, you can’t see through to the wire like you can with a mesh wreath.
The three boards (cross, triangle-tree, and horse) that are shaped differently cost a little more. I guess that is because they had to have specially made tools to make them over the round boards. The triangle board is supposed to be a tree board, but I really don’t care for the bulky shape of it with the finished product.
On the good side, they are light weight and easy to work with. The boards are sturdier than the traditional wire and Styrofoam rings. Just using zip ties rather than the chenille ties is a huge step up from ease of use and time saver. I couldn’t believe I had never thought of this one before.
The website also boasts that the boards are now made from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic. In these times that is a great thing to have.
One feature that is a sure seller is that the back is almost as great as the front. Since all of the business is on the front, all you see on the back is where the zip tie is looped. This makes it so much easier to attach to your front door or wall and it lays flat rather than worrying about lumps and bumps that sometimes crop up when using traditional wreath bases.
If you’ve ever seen the wreaths made out of a spatter screen, then you may have a better idea of what this product is like, only much easier. The holes are drilled evenly around and you won’t be poked by any stray wire screening. It also is much neater and easier to use than a splatter screen.
Another thing I find difficult is the fact that they ran out of boards often on Amazon.com before the holidays. But I guess that’s a good thing, even though they may have lost sales over it. They normally had the inventory back on the site within a day or two, it wasn’t like they were out indefinitely. I’m also sure they will have a lot more stock on hand in the coming months in anticipation for the rush of sales this year.
While they aren’t the cheapest way to go when you’re creating a wreath, I think in the long run you will be saving time and money. The large wreath board is $8 and the horse is $10.50. If you are in the U.S the shipping can be a cost you don’t want either. If you order from Amazon.com and are a Prime Member you can get them considerably cheaper, but they are sold in packs of 5. The large wreath form is $45 ($9 ea), but like I said, there are no shipping charges for Prime Members and we know how fast shipping charges can add up!
Here in the States, they are now available on store shelves at Michael’s for 14.95, but if you can get a 40% off coupon for the purchase which would make it a bit more affordable. I’m told they also have a coupon right now for 20% off of your entire purchase. So that you can get all of the other supplies at a discounted price as well.
One additional feature Unique in the Creek has on their website is that Laurie lists all of the products she uses right there on her sight. You can either buy them from her, or directly from Amazon.com. She also sells the paper, vinyl and digital images that are used on character boards (ones that have only two rows of holes on the outside.
You may have noticed that there are a couple of holes on the outside row that aren’t the same distance from the others. These are actually the holes you can use to place a loose zip tie and use as a hanger. No more trying to figure out where and what to attach something to hang your finished work. Just make sure your work has these holes facing to the top before you start if you’re using a character board. LOL!
Overall, this product is very functional and I believe for the money it is very economical. As I mentioned before, just the savings in time and supplies is five stars in my book. It’s difficult in some areas to sell craft work for the time you have into it. By saving time in making your wreath, you will be saving, because your time is as important as anyone else’s!
